Hard drive wiping
Whale IT Recycling wipes hard drives securely with certified software. Fully circular method, reuse is possible. Complies with NIST800-88 guidelines for data security.

Secure hard drive wiping
At Whale IT Recycling, safety and privacy are our top priorities. We understand the importance of protecting your sensitive information, which is why we use a secure and GDPR-compliant method to wipe your old hard drives.
Our secure and GDPR-compliant method
We use Certus-certified software to ensure your data is completely and securely wiped from the hard drive. Wiping hard drives is also known as “wiping” or “data erasure.” Our method complies with the strict NIST800-88 guidelines.
What is NIST800-88?
This set of guidelines was developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States. It includes detailed specifications and procedures for securely wiping data from hard drives. By following NIST800-88, we can guarantee that your data will be wiped in a very secure and effective manner, leaving no traces of information behind.

Reuse instead of demolition
We strongly believe in reuse as the most sustainable form of recycling. Hard drives that are still in good condition can be reused as products. This extends the lifespan of these devices and reduces the demand for new raw materials and energy needed to produce new hard drives. This contributes to a greener and more environmentally friendly future.
Combining data erasure with hardware buyback
Most of the time, wiping hard drives is combined with buying back hardware. We wipe hard drives directly from the device they are installed in. This does not require access to the data itself. Instead of booting into Windows, we use our certified software to start up computers, laptops, or servers, allowing us to instantly identify all data carriers. For complete transparency, our Certified Erasure Report includes detailed information about both the erased hard drive and the device it was removed from.
Wiping defective hard drives
Not all hard drives can be wiped, for example, due to a defect. In such cases, we use a specialized shredder to physically destroy the hard drive, ensuring that all data is irretrievably destroyed and your privacy remains fully protected.
Before wiping begins, our software carefully checks the hard drive’s status to identify any sectors that cannot be erased. If a hard drive has too many problematic sectors, we immediately proceed with shredding to guarantee complete data destruction.
When we wipe or shred hard drives, we provide two reports for complete transparency. The Certified Erasure Reportconfirms secure data removal for wiped hard drives, while the Demolition Certificate guarantees complete physical destruction for shredded hard drives. Both documents include all relevant details, such as all serial numbers, ensuring you have a clear record of the process.
